Domestic violence and child abuse
In the Caribbean Netherlands, there is a special law to help people who need care or support. This is called the Social Support and Combating Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Decree BES. .
The aim of this law is to ensure that people can live independently for as long as possible and actively participate in society. In addition, the law stipulates that both citizens and professionals can report to a special reporting center if there are concerns about domestic violence or child abuse.
Professionals are also given the right to report without the consent of those involved. However, it is important that the professional informs the client about this, so that there is transparency, and the client knows what steps are being taken. Furthermore, certain organizations must prepare a protection code. This is a plan with steps that must be followed to prevent and address domestic violence and child abuse.
What is the protection code?
The protection code helps people who work in healthcare, education and other sectors to know what to do if they are concerned about domestic violence or child abuse. There are five steps that guide them step by step, from the moment they become concerned to the decision about what help is needed.
Why is the protection code important?
The protection code ensures that professionals think carefully about what is best for someone who may be in danger. This way they can provide the right support and stop the violence.
Who should use the protection code?
People who work in the following sectors must follow the protection code if they think there is domestic violence or child abuse:
- Care and assistance
- Education and childcare
- Youth care
- Women’s shelters
- Compulsory education
- Detention centers and probation
In this way, we work together to create a safe environment for everyone.
The five steps of the protection code:
- Identify the signs
- Ask for advice
- Conversation the patient, client, student or parent
- Evaluation and assessment
- Decide: provide help to the patient, client, student yourself or file a report?
